Did you catch every episode on saturday mornings of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles when you grew up back in the day, did you love collecting transformers or power ranger figures. Have you ever imagined being your favorite He-man character on the playground while playing with your various roleplay toys. Then this might be the game jam for you.
The goal of this jam is to take an old school show made with the purpose of selling toys to the masses, such as TMNT, Power rangers, Street Sharks, Thundercats and make a new tabletop roleplaying game out of your chosen show. This is but a small selection of availible hsows to choose from, there are way too many to name them all here, so pick one or more you enjoy and let your imagination run wild.
General rules and guidelines
Rule number 1.
We unfortunately don’t own the rights to these shows, so we have to make our own legally distinct properties based on one of these shows. For example, instead of Biker mice from mars, we could make fighter pilot squirrels from jupiter.
Rule number 2.
While the name won’t directly reference these shows due to copyright and legal reasons. The game should have options to make the original characters from the show your game is based on. For example. Say the main characters of your game are the middle aged super samurai frogs. The game should have options to make the original ninja turtles if the players so desire. This can be done either through having race or species options, but you can also go with traits or knacks or anything else depending on what kind of system or rules you have in mind. If you have a game where the main characters are humans such as G.I. joe or Power rangers. Race options aren’t always needed, so let your imagination and creativity be your guide.
Rule number 3.
Please use a srd (System rules document) that was made available for public use, but you may also make your own system of rules to use for this game project. Do your own research on whats allowed to be used or not, but since this game jam is just for fun don’t worry too much about it.
Ruler number 4.
Character creation/options or certain game mechanics should mention or reference real world toys or marketing in some way. Such as a character having various toyetic weapons or vehicles to work with. And how the executives may occasionally meddle in your game/show to promote or make changes to your setting or characters.
How close do we have to stay to the source material?
It depends entirely on the type of show you want to work on. TMNT (Teenage mutant ninja turtles) and other shows like the transformers have several iterations with there own differences between each other. While some older cartoons only have the one show with no modern reboots. So some things would offer more freedom than others. Ideally I would like people to stay as close to the show as possible. But I’m not against people introducing new ideas for lore or characters if they have cool ideas that work within the mechanics of the game system you have chosen.
How many pages do we have to work with?
As many as you want, ideally somewhere between 10 to 25 pages but i’m not going to force you to make hundreds of pages, If you want to and can manage more than 25 go ahead. The deadline is two months for the date of this game jam being posted. So hopefully enough time to put something decent together.
Can we make a game that covers multiple shows?
If you have a good idea for mashing several shows together or making a system that can cover multiple genres or types of shows, go ahead. I would recommend if its your first time looking into these types of shows to just pick one you really like to keep things easy for yourself.
Are we allowed to use AI?
I can't stop people from using AI in the work process. Ideally i want people to make as much of the game as possible themselves. But if you do decide to use ai for writing or art assets. Please write down which portions were made using AI. If artwork is made with AI i will only judge the game and its writing. Artwork will be excluded in such a case.
What do we win?
This is mostly just going to be for fun so anyone who manages to finish a game is a winner in my book. Though you may be judged on how well you recreated a show within a game system.
