💉🤕VISUAL NOVELS 😈💔
FOR GIRLTHINGS WITH SOMETHING WRONG WITH THEM
Hewwo, and thank you for your interest in the the toxic yuri vn jam! Did you take part in the first jam? That one was a banger! Over 200 entries ain't some small fry, eh? In these trying times when the internet wants to choke out all the good shit, it's paramount to make stories like these; This is a jam for stories that really dig in to tackle trauma and problematic relationships. Stories that show despair, jealousy and rage. Stupid girls that make each other worse. Sadistic girls being manipulative on purpose. Societal trauma and the destructive ways it manifests in girlthings. You know, all that stuff. Basically, we love it when girls suffer, yaaaay!
To get a clearer picture on what kinds of narratives have connected with us, do yourself a favour and look through the first jam's winning entries (https://itch.io/jam/toxic-yuri-vn-jam) and especiallythe awards ceremony (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hetkQdFuUrk).
We will play through all the submissions and pick FIVE of our favorites which will receive $1000 each. There will be no first place. Outside of the main 5 submissions, each one of the FIVE judges will handpick a personal favorite as an honorable mention, which will receive$200. Due to payment and theme reasons, every member involved in the jam must be legal adults.
Please note that, in addition to the overall quality of the works—writing, art, music, etc.—one of the primary criteria in determining which entries will be granted an award is being on-topic. In other words, while the individual elements of a work are important to their overall composition, a work with a conventionally "bad" component (e.g. very amateurish art) will not lose points on those grounds alone.Intention and sincerity are the most important parts of our judging criteria, so try and make something representative of your heart more than anything!
Even if you've never made a visual novel before, now is a good opportunity to start. Our last jam had plenty amazing first time dev entries, and this time lets do the same. Join the chat, lurk or whatever, but know that you can ask there for any dev advice and there will be plenty of helpful people giving you answers.Check out this nadia nova "why i think anyone can make a visual novel" tutorial (https://thatsvn.club/why-i-think-anyone-can-make-a-visual-novel.html).
🩸THEME🩸
~ Psychosexual Trauma~
Your story doesn't need to be a deep dive analysis, but think about the overlap of gender, sexuality and trauma and how that all informs the growth of a person's essential self, gender and sexuality.
✍️❤️RULES FOR STORIES:
- We want gay shit!! The entries must focus on toxic queer relationships between women ortoxic queer female experiences. Any identities are permitted as long as you personally feel like it is part of the queer female experience. We ain't gender cops.
- Toxic yuri can be interpreted as anything from idiots navigating awful inexperienced romance to intentionally abusive violent criminal relationships. There isn't a strict criteria for what counts as toxic and it is a very vibes based interpretation. The jam is still created with the expectation that we can have a place for people to submit games leaning further towards the more intense themes.
- We want to see stories about girlthings in complicated relationships. For example, this can involve conflict due to trauma or mental health, selfish or cruel people making it someone else's problem, people in awful circumstances without a single good course of action, or simply people who make each other worse intentionally or not.
- Graphic and sexual themes are permitted, and given the theme, to some extent expected. Your story can be happy or sad or whatever else, the tone is up to you. All we ask is that you tell a story that's meaningful to you, one that we hope will resonate with the reader.
- Be mindful of harmful stereotypes regarding gender, sexuality, race, mental illness, etc. While there are no specific things that are off-limits per se, we may disqualify an entry if it leaves a bad taste in our mouth (e.g. A game that simply perpetuates the aforementioned stereotypes rather than engaging with the topic on a deeper level).
- While the stories themselves can have characters or interactions that are bigoted, we do not want entries that promote bigotry! BE NICE.
🖥️🤓TECHNICAL RULES:
- Ren'Py is HIGHLY PREFERRED, however any engine/framework which can create visual novels that are playable for all win, linux and mac are permitted.
- All members involved in a team and the game jam have to be legal adults.
- This is an unranked game jam, however the judge panel will pick five entries together which will receive$1000 each, and each of the five judges will pick a personal honorable mention which will receive $200 each.
- There will be no ETA for when the judging will be complete. It will depend on how many entries we get. Estimating a month minimum. It took us two months last time.
- Any team size is permitted, the person who submits the game will be responsible for splitting the potential prize money. Be sure to have a plan for distributing the prize! Team size will be considered in the judging in an effort to make things fair for every jam participant.
- No paid games as submissions.Once the judging has concluded you are free to do what you want with your submission.
- We accept entries with NSFW, heavy and uncomfortable themes. Just give a heads up in some form of content warning.
- While development should take place within the jam time frame, the usage of pre-existing code, free to use, public domain, creative commons and all that type of stuff is allowed and encouraged. It's normal to plan, just don't start making your game early.
- The usage of generative AI for your submission is forbidden. If you personally don't think you're very good at a particular artistic endeavor (e.g., art, music, writing), we would still rather see your best and most sincere attempt than generated assets.
